A rising star in the Democratic Party is thirty-something Texas state representative and senate candidate James Talarico. Talarico has gained popularity in part because he speaks openly about his faith while advocating progressive policies. He frequently quotes Scripture during debates, media interviews, and talk-show appearances.
I do believe Talarico is sincere, but I believe he is sincerely wrong in some major ways.
While he claims to hold to the Christian faith, Talarico’s theology comes across as closer to universalism. Consider one clip from The Ezra Klein Show. In it, Talarico suggests that all religions are ultimately pointing toward the same truth. This idea may resonate with many modern Western audiences, but it is not the historic Christian faith.

The Christian faith rests on a clear foundation: All humanity has sinned, and sin leads to death. Jesus Christ died and was resurrected so that our sin could be forgiven and we could be reconciled to God.
In contrast, Talarico’s vision of faith appears to focus primarily on love, kindness, and decency, with very little emphasis on repentance or self-denial. It is a faith that seeks the banner of Christianity while minimizing judgment and moral boundaries.
But the Gospel itself contains a dividing line.
Jesus said plainly that no one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6). Access to God comes through the way of the cross—through confession, repentance, and faith in Christ.
What Talarico represents is a modern version of progressive Christianity: all love and no judgment, all acceptance and no repentance, a wide road rather than the narrow path. He presents Jesus ultimately as an example to follow and not the Lord we submit our lives to daily.
Again, I appreciate his sincerity. But sincerity alone is not enough. When it comes to the core truths of the Christian faith, James Talarico is sincerely wrong.
