The Beginning
"In the beginning, God created…"
This is how the story of God begins in Genesis, and most of us are probably pretty familiar with the narrative. We are probably so familiar with it that we can almost pass by it without a second thought. However, this simple phrase is full of meaning. From this simple phrase we see the Trinity (God in three persons), the origin of all life, and God's eternal existence. Let me explain.
The Hebrew Reveals More
The Hebrew word used for God is plural. We see this further when God speaks to himself and says, "let us…" Secondly, the word used for create is specifically used when God is the subject. While it is true that we create art, literature, buildings, and a host of other things, we do not do so in the way God creates.
Created Out of Nothing
The God we serve created out of nothing. There was no matter or stuff in which to create, so He created the stuff to create the world. The phrase that says, "God created the Heavens and the earth…" was a Hebrew way of saying everything. God created everything that exists. This was unique. While the ancient near east cultures had gods, all their gods created with external matter. The Hebrew God was the only one that did it out of nothing.
What This Tells Us
So, what does this tell us? First, God is above any pagan god. He is the ultimate creator. He makes something out of nothing. Secondly, if He can do this, then he can do anything else. Any miracle, crazy act of nature, any life cured from the contamination of sin, He does simply and easily. His creation is the anchoring point of our faith. He made something out of nothing, and so I do not doubt he can turn my heart of stone into a heart filled with love for Him.
